Woodland Walk

Another European Robin image !

A pair of Eurasian Treecreeper fed constantly.

A woodland path - where are the large wandering mixed flocks of
birds one used to see in years gone by ...?

Hawfinch

A suprise find today, while attempting to locate species for the county Xmas Birdhunt, was a Hawfinch near Woburn Park. The light was grim and the bird was a bit distant - so only record shots !

Oh - another European Robin image !

Wood Warbler @ Octagon Farm Spinney

The two Black-winged Stilt found at Willington yesterday evening had departed for Abberton Reservoir, Essex, so another chance to photograph Wood Warbler at Octagon Farm Spinney was second prize. This one, however, was not so easy !

A walk past the Sandy Warren heath restoration area at the Lodge produced nothing too exciting - so Robin and Blue Tit will have to do !

Eggington

No sign of the Barn Owl after an early start but did, however, find a fresh owl pellet beneath a post used by said owl, which, adding two and two together equals...?

Spring is in the air, but some winter visitors will be around for a couple of months yet. This Fieldfare was feasting, along with the local Blackbirds, on these haws.

Would you be offended if I posted yet another European Robin shot ?

South Bedfordshire

Although the light was reasonable (for winter) the birds refused to come close for anything other than record shots - two of the three Red Kite (as last year), a pair of Raven and Common Buzzard.

Brilliant Bunting

Present since 31st January, this record shot of a Little Bunting showed on and off until about 09:30 this morning at Amwell nature reserve in Hertfordshire. Digi-scoping would definately have the edge on this occasion ! The bird associates with Reed Bunting at the feeding station set between two reed beds.

A few Water Rail can often be seen scurrying between the reedbeds.

Not another Robin shot !

Woburn: Lesser Spotted Woodpecker

A once familiar call alerted me to a Lesser Spotted Woodpecker. This sparrow-sized woodpecker is best looked for in spring before the leaves emerge.

Ok already - it's another Robin image !

Canal-side Walk

Another spring-like day ensued, with temperatures reaching 12 Celsius, prompting a walk along the Grand Union Canal from the Globe Pub to Leighton Lock. Bird song much in evidence including this European Robin.

Behind the sewage works a short burst of song from a Common Chiffchaff, nearby a large source of food awaits !
