A very gloomy and rain filled day so photography was uninspiring. Oystercatcher and Yellow Wagtail were seen. Other new birds included a Common Sandpiper and a male Shelduck on the scrape. A Little Egret put in an appearance.

Local Patch - 04/03/09: First African migrant arrives !
So, please forgive the postage-sized record shot, for it's the symbolism behind the image that counts: SPRING has arrived !

Norfolk
This rare American vagrant occasionally makes its way over to Europe - unlike Alexander Wilson, who first described the bird. He headed in the opposite direction - heading for the New World after leaving his native Scotland.
Over at Titchwell, a few Little Egret could be seen feeding.

A sizeable flock of Bar-tailed Godwit on the freshmarsh.

There were plenty of Red Knot on view.

With winter not far away, groups of Pink-footed Geese could be seen arriving from the North. These birds were feeding near Wells.

Rainham Marshes RSPB Reserve
A juvenile Red-backed Shrike was just outside the reserve viewed from a public footpath along the bank of the Thames.

The current visitors centre will eventually become an educational building. An interesting strucure indeed - my first thought was 'yuk' ! (and remains so).
A Wood Sandpiper was just a bit too distant.
A distant Northern Wheatear.
A few Little Egret were dotted around the reserve.
This Ruff showed well from the hide.

My best view of a Water Vole. This is a top site for these declining creatures.

Roesel's Bush Cricket Metrioptera roeselii. A scarce cricket, mainly found near coasts but increasing inland.
A Migrant Hawker.

Norfolk Niceties

Lynford is a regular site for Hawfinch. There were a few in the arboretum and half a dozen or so in the paddocks feeding under the Hornbeams.

This fellow has perfected the art of levitation !

Great-spotted Woodpecker

A mini 'twitch' to see two Waxwing reported in a residential area of Kings Lynn.

Over at Thornham Harbour there was no sign of the Lesser Yellowlegs of recent days. This Little Egret did, however, oblige with a fly-past.

Over at Titchwell RSPB reserve six Bearded Tit were feeding very close to the footpath oblivious to one and all.

Rowdy behaviour on the marsh - two Black-tailed Godwit lock bills.

Dunstable STW
More signs of Spring as the mild weather continues. Birds in song include Skylark, Chaffinch and Dunnock.
One of five Reed Bunting around the Scrape today.

The Little Egret continues to be noted in and around the site. Last week it was along the brook adjacent to the bypass.

Little Egret at Dunstable Wetland Reserve
This Little Egret posed nicely on the scrape for this somewhat over-exposed digiscoped shot as it preened and fed. There seems to be one found somewhere in the county at most times of the year - a marked contrast to only a few years back when I had to twitch my first Bedfordshire one at Harrold Country Park in August 1994.
